How do I load a string?
Take a look at the string loading instructions.
Which age is ZipString best suited for?
We suggest ages 8+. Still, with a grown-up watching, kids as young as 3 have enjoyed a ZipString, and plenty of grandmas rave about theirs. Lots of people consider it a must-have toy to carry in a handbag (no joke)!
Can I touch the string?
Yes. While the string is in flight, go ahead and touch it with your fingers. It poses no danger.
How do I care for my ZipString?
As weeks go by, dust, grit, and pet fur can build up around the wheels. Give it a brush now and then to clear the dust. It also helps to keep the string off the floor.
How much play time does one ZipString charge give?
With ordinary play, one charge gives you 3-4 hours.
Is it possible for a ZipString to send its string sideways?
No. Gravity makes the string settle into a vertical line every time. Visit our Science page to learn more. It is quite a neat effect.
What if ZipString were run inside a vacuum?
Great question. With no air around, the string would simply fall straight down. The string needs air resistance, or drag, in order to fly.
What if ZipString were used with little or no gravity?
If gravity were missing, the string loop could spin in whichever direction lines up with the device.
What if ZipString operated in outer space, with no air and little or no gravity?
After ZipString reached full speed, with neither gravity nor air drag, the string loop would settle into a perfect circle.

Answers to frequent questions on what we sell
Where did we get the inspiration?
Eight years back, a high school teacher called Bruce Yaney posted a YouTube video of a tabletop machine he built to shoot string into the air. Then in December 2020, Stephen needed a concept for a Georgia Tech contest, which required building a machine no bigger than a credit card in footprint. He recalled Bruce Yaney's machine from years earlier, shrank it down, and added a battery so you could hold it in your hand. Stephen took the hackathon prize, and that is how the very first ZipString came to life!
Didn’t something similar exist back in the 1990s?
Ah, you probably mean “String Thing”. That gadget flung a short, heavy piece of paracord, and the rope was tossed upward by its own momentum. A fun trick, but nothing was truly flying. Head to our Science page to see how the string of a ZipString really flies.
Knockoffs and Counterfeits and Scams, OH MY!
They say imitation is the sincerest flattery, so what do we call fake impersonation?
Creating something new is never inexpensive. It takes plenty of effort and time. ZipString went through countless versions before reaching its current form, so we do not fear competitors. What upsets us is that copycats and scammers exploit the buzz and hurt people who are excited about ZipString.
It looks magical, how does it work?
What if the string snags or tangles mid-run?
Safety was designed in from day one. During operation, the device keeps checking how much load the string is under. If anything pushes the string past its limits, the motors shut off at once and the button is released too. ZipString will not run again until the user lets go of the button and presses it a second time.
Can I make string at home?
Technically yes, though it is harder than it sounds. Our Science page explains why the string really flies.
Find a lightweight string with the correct thickness, rough it up until it is a little fuzzy, and then join the ends without a visible seam. That should do the trick.
Splicing string is fiddly, so we actually built our own splicing machine to keep the joins silent.
